Congratulations on importing your vehicle into Canada. Before your vehicle can be registered on the roads, click on the appropriate line below to take your final steps.*Note: If your vehicle is a Canadian Vehicle Returning, the below steps are not required. Please contact your registration office or auto insurance broker for more details.
When the driver delivers your vehicle to your door they will provide you with the following original documents:
- Transport Canada – Vehicle Import Form (2 copies – Stamped by Customs)
- Bill of Sale
- Certificate of Title (front and back)
With these documents in your possession, take the following steps to complete your RIV and Inspection process.
Steps
1. Send a copy of your Recall Clearance Letter/Printout to RIV at:

2. Wait 1 – 3 business days for RIV to email you a link to obtain your Vehicle Inspection Form. RIV will also provide you with a list of certified inspection facilities where you can have your vehicle inspected. Canadian Tire is a popular inspection facility because they are connected electronically with RIV.
3. Contact your local auto insurance broker to obtain a temporary operating permit to drive your vehicle to the inspection facility and back to the insurance broker. When you contact your auto insurance broker, ask them if your vehicle requires a Provincial Inspection.
4. Contact and make an appointment with an inspection facility. Please take the following original documents to your inspection facility:
a. Transport Canada – Vehicle Import Form (2 copies – Stamped by Customs)
b. RIV Inspection Form
c. Certificate of Title (front and back)
d. Bill of Sale
5. When your vehicle passes the Federal and Provincial Inspections, your inspection facility will provide you with the following original documents:
a. Transport Canada – Vehicle Import Form (with 2 Stamps – showing the Customs and Federal Inspection)
b. Passed Vehicle Inspection Report (if a Provincial Inspection was required on your vehicle)
c. RIV Inspection Form
d. Certificate of Title (front and back)
e. Bill of Sale
6. Proceed to your auto insurance broker or motor vehicle department to license and insure your vehicle. Please take your vehicle and the following original documents with you:
a. Transport Canada – Vehicle Import Form (with 2 Stamps – showing the Customs and Federal Inspection)
b. Passed Vehicle Inspection Report (if a Provincial Inspection was required on your vehicle).
c. B3 Customs Coding Form (showing your payment of duty and taxes with Customs)
d. Certificate of Title (front and back)
e. Bill of Sale
7. Make any applicable “Provincial Sales Tax” payment at your auto insurance broker office or motor vehicle department.
