Step 3 – Importing a Personal Vehicle

To begin importing a personal vehicle, Customsquote Brokerage Services will require certain documents to satisfy the requirements of Canada Customs (CBSA). All importers should direct their Seller or Carrier to Step 3 of this website or have them send the the following documents to:

Required Documents

Please provide each of the following documents to Customsquote Brokerage Services:

  • Bill of Sale or Proforma Invoice – a.) Bill of Sale template or b.) Proforma Invoice template (for U.S. vehicles returning) or c.) Proforma Invoice template (Gifted Vehicles)
  • Certificate of Title or Certificate of Origin for a Vehicle (front and back copy – signed by seller)
  • Recall Clearance Letter or Printout (*required for vehicles under 15 years old) – click here for a helpful link to obtain a recall clearance letter.
  • AES Vehicle Export Request Form – Required for the mandatory 72 hour export notice filing to U.S. Customs (CBP). Please click here to complete our request form. *Note: if the crossing date changes, we will require 24 hours notice to make changes with US Customs. The information on this form must be exact or U.S. Customs could delay or deny entry at time of crossing.

Note: The original bill of sale and title will need to be with the vehicle when clearing Customs!

Document required to receive the best duty rates

Vehicles made in Canada, U.S. and Mexico are generally duty free. To receive the best duty rate for vehicles not made in Canada, U.S. or Mexico, the Exporter’s Statement of Origin may be completed and signed by the Vendor, Exporter or Manufacturer of the vehicle being shipped.

Complete the Exporter’s Statement of origin above only if importing a vehicle that originates and is being directly shipped from a country listed on the “Trade Agreement Countries” form below with an “X” marked in the GPT column. The Vehicle may qualify for a lower duty rate under GPT.
Trade Agreement Countries

Vehicles that originate from a country listed on the “Trade Agreement Countries” form above will qualify for duty rates under the MFN Tariff Treatment or any other “Tariff Treatment” marked with an “X” in its corresponding column.

By clicking on the mode of transportation below, you will see other customs documents applicable to your shipment. Note: The carrier can provide the bill of lading, cargo control document / eManifest, their Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) and Border Crossing information.

Note: Canada Customs (CBSA) working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will perform a “Soil Examination” when a vehicle arrives in Canada, you will want to make sure the vehicle is clean, free from dirt, bugs and insects before it arrives in Canada. A document called a “Fumigation Certificate” will provide proof to Customs (CBSA) that the vehicle was professionally cleaned before it was shipped to Canada.
